About the team

Hertfordshire County Council is a leading local authority with a highly regarded Coroner Service. This is your chance to be part of a busy team that is flexible, responds quickly to change and is never complacent.

The Hertfordshire Coroner Service operates from The Old Courthouse, Hatfield. Last year the service dealt with 3,000 reported deaths with approximately 400 of these deaths requiring an Inquest in our 2 coroner's courts.

The Coroner Service ensures the bereaved are placed at the heart of our service and this role requires the ability to work face to face with members of the public and various partner agencies and legal professionals.

About the role

You will be working for the Hertfordshire Coroner Service within the Democratic & Statutory Services directorate under Legal Service within Resources.

You will be required to work as part of a busy but dynamic team to represent the interests of HM Coroner for Hertfordshire by providing an investigative service and assisting in the execution of the coroner's legal and public protection duties, in accordance with the Coroners and Justice Act 2009.

A variable hour's position has arisen for a Coroner's Court Clerk in Hertfordshire Coroner Service based in Hatfield. You will assist the team in providing a full range of administrative and general office duties related to the delivery of inquests in court.

This means working on an ad hoc basis to deliver court sometimes working 2 or 3 days per week on a rota system with 2 other clerk colleagues.

You will act as liaison between the Coroner, Coroner's Officers, Court Support Service Volunteers, the bereaved and all properly interested persons before, during and after Inquest.

During your day you will be responsible for the organisation and support of the family, friends all witnesses and jurors for each inquest.

Inquests are recorded. You must be comfortable working with technology including Microsoft software as you will be responsible for the appropriate recording of proceedings, swearing in of witnesses and juries and maintaining evidence.

You will also deliver general service-related administrative duties.

About you

Essential:
  • Excellent customer care, communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct formal interviews.
  • Proficient at working with technology including Microsoft software.
Desirable:
  • Previous experience would be an advantage, although training would be given for the right person.
We welcome applications from candidates who currently reside in the UK with established proof of right to work documentation. We are not able to offer sponsorship at this time for this role.
