Why Lancaster?

We’re an award-winning, co-operative, kind and responsible Council, and we’re incredibly proud of our district and communities that reach from the coast to the mountains, including the historic City of Lancaster, Morecambe, Carnforth and many other beautiful places.

We have a bright and exciting future including transformational projects such as Eden Project and Canal Quarter. Our ambition is to transform the way we work, with a relentless focus on delivering outcomes for our communities.

The Role

We’re looking for a highly capable Engagement Manager to lead our Communications, Marketing and Community Engagement teams. This is a strategic role where you will very much have the opportunity and support to contribute to the delivery of our Council Plan 24-27, and work alongside our ambitious leadership team and elected members in the process.

Heading up the Engagement team, you’ll be working at the heart of the council, leading comms and marketing at such an exciting time for the district, and also continue our good work on community engagement whilst bringing a fresh perspective.

In addition to the day to day running of these important services there is a focus on developing a customer experience strategy and reviewing our approach to community engagement. Another big focus is to lead on the alignment of health focussed partnerships, working collaboratively to support delivery of Happy and Healthy Communities, one of our priority policies.

We recognise that our goals can only be achieved through a collaborative and joined-up approach with our local communities, stakeholders and partners, so working in partnership both internally and externally is key.

The post is permanent and the hours of work for this position are 37 per week, but we will of course consider flexible working requests. This post is hybrid with a combination of attendance at onsite and online meetings, bookable workspaces and working from home. Meetings may be in Lancaster, Morecambe or elsewhere in the District or County.

The Council currently operates an excellent Flexible Working Hours Scheme which applies to this post.

About You

Our job description tells the full story, but ideally you will be an experienced and talented engagement person with knowledge and experience in communications, marketing and community engagement. You’ll have led multi-disciplinary teams before, and the challenge of leading this relatively newly formed team will get you out of bed in the morning.

You will identify with our organisational values of Pride, Ownership, Working Together and Ambition.

Our Benefits

Lancaster is a great place to work, as well as being part of something special you will also benefit from:

  • Generous flexible working scheme, where hybrid working is our default
  • Generous annual leave allowance
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • A range of employee benefits including discounted gym membership, cycle to work and car lease schemes, the opportunity to purchase extra time off, as well as discounts on days out, activities and retail.

Lancaster City Council has unanimously declared a climate emergency and will therefore work towards reducing carbon emissions to net-zero by 2030. As part of this role, you will be expected to participate and work towards reducing both carbon emissions and the impacts of climate change.

We are an Investor in People, Forces Friendly employer, and an Armed Forces Covenant committed organisation. We welcome applications from defence reserves and other members of our armed forces community.

At Lancaster City Council we aim to have a diverse workforce that is representative of the district that we serve and provide a working environment where each employee feels able to bring their whole self to work. We welcome applications from all sections of our community and provide several supportive and inclusive workplace networks and safe spaces for employees to feel connected. Our workplace wellbeing strategy drives our commitment to staff wellbeing initiatives and ensuring that our organisation is a great place to work for all.

We are a disability confident committed employer. Please see the ‘help with applying’ section of our recruitment pages for more detail on our guaranteed interview schemes.

Interviews are scheduled to take place on Thursday 12th December 2024
