Are you ready to take the next step in your procurement career? We’re looking for a strategic, commercially minded procurement professional to join us as an Assistant Category Manager. This is your opportunity to develop as a trusted advisor, working on high-value and complex procurement projects that shape public services, drive efficiencies, and deliver real value for money.
The Post
As Assistant Category Manager, you’ll provide expert procurement advice and strategic support across a range of projects. Working alongside the Category Manager, you’ll be involved in:
- End-to-end procurement management – overseeing low, medium, and high-value projects, ensuring compliance and efficiency.
- Providing expert procurement guidance – advising stakeholders on best practices, market analysis, commercial strategies, and legislative requirements.
- Driving category management principles – taking ownership of a procurement category (or range of categories) and embedding strategic sourcing techniques.
- Leading procurement teams – managing multi-disciplinary teams to deliver procurement solutions that meet business needs.
- Championing social value and transparency – ensuring procurement activities align with Public Procurement rules, the Social Value Act, and the Council’s Procurement Strategy.
- Deputising for the Category Manager – stepping up when required and gaining hands-on experience in senior-level procurement leadership.
- Developing leadership and coaching skills – mentoring junior procurement professionals and supporting the growth of the wider team.
We’re looking for an ambitious and commercially astute procurement professional who is eager to take on greater responsibility. To succeed in this role, you should have:
- Strong knowledge of procurement processes, ideally in the public sector
- A solid understanding of procurement legislation, governance, and compliance requirements
- Expertise in at least one procurement category (as listed in the job description)
- A track record of managing multiple procurement projects, meeting deadlines, and keeping stakeholders engaged
- Commercial acumen – the ability to apply strategic sourcing techniques to drive financial savings and service improvements
- Great people skills – adept at leading teams, influencing stakeholders, and providing clear, objective procurement advice
- A problem-solving mindset – able to think strategically and navigate complex procurement challenges
This is a fantastic opportunity to take your procurement expertise to the next level, hone your leadership skills, and make a real difference in shaping the future of public services.
If you're ready to step up and grow in a dynamic procurement environment, we’d love to hear from you!
