West Berkshire Council requires a full-time Public Rights of Way Senior Ranger to assist in the management of West Berkshire’s public rights of way.
Reporting to the Public Rights of Way Officer and working predominantly as part of a team of three, your duties will be to undertake practical maintenance work on the Council’s network of public rights of way, and to manage the Ranger team.
You will need to prioritise and allocate their schedules, and to be responsible for risk assessments and arranging maintenance of machinery and tools.
The work will comprise clearance of vegetation using various pieces of equipment including a compact tractor, pedestrian mower and hedgecutters. It will also entail the maintenance of the rights of way infrastructure which includes the installation and repair of signage, gates and minor surfacing works.
This is an outdoor-based job and will require fit and healthy candidates, able to work outside in all conditions and able to carry out strenuous physical work. Ideally you will have experience of some practical countryside work, of managing or supervising others, the use of horticultural machinery and also be able to deal in a tactful manner with landowners and members of the public.
A full clean driving license is required, which if you are aged 20 or younger, you must have held for at least 1 year. Ideally you will have experience of towing a trailer.
