We are St Helens Borough Council

Located in the heart of the Northwest close to Liverpool, Manchester and Lancashire, St Helens is a modernising Council which is passionate and ambitious for the children and families we support, our communities and our workforce. As part of our transformation journey, we continue to build on our progress and put children firmly at the centre of our care. We can only do this because of our highly valued, skilled, and supported workforce.

We are dealing with an exciting range of planning challenges, balancing needs for major new development linked to the Council’s ambitious growth agenda as well as delivering a significant amount of new housing and accomplishing the regeneration of both town centres, whilst supporting community infrastructure against the protection of the Borough’s greenspaces and other environmental assets.

You will provide a lead role with the support of a talented, friendly and enthusiastic planning policy team - in implementing the Council’s adopted Local Plan, as well as developing other areas of the Council’s planning framework, including the preparation of a number of Supplementary Planning Documents and evidenced based documents.

You must have significant planning policy experience and a degree or relevant qualification in planning or a related discipline, and a good knowledge of appropriate legislation, guidance and procedures. You must also be able to communicate well, both orally and in writing, analyse information in a clear and logical manner and meet corporate priorities and deadlines, along with good IT skills. You should also be able to work well as a team member and individually with minimum supervision, be enthusiastic and able to lead and motivate others.

In line with our new ways of working, this full-time permanent role is hybrid and will involve working from home 3 days a week and 2 days a week working in our agile hub at Atlas House in St Helens Town Centre, allowing you that extra freedom and work life balance.
