About us
Brighter Futures for Children (BFfC) is a not-for-profit company, owned by, but independent of, Reading Borough Council. Although we are independent, we are very much part of the Reading Family. Our people enjoy all of benefits as other Council employees including membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and continuous service. We are responsible for the delivery of children’s social care, early help & prevention, education services (including SEND). This also includes fostering and adoption, the Youth Offending Service and traded services with schools.
If you live here, work here or just visit, you will already know Reading is a great place and at BFfC we’re dedicated to making it even better. Key to this is ensuring our workforce is equipped for the challenge – this is where you come in. Our main aim is to protect and enhance the lives of the children of Reading. We help families find long-term solutions to ensure children lead happy, healthy and successful lives.
Reading/BFfC is proud to be one of the first trailblazer sites for the Mental Health Support Teams (MHST), delivering evidence-based interventions aimed at improving the emotional wellbeing and mental health of children and young people by either working directly with them or with their parents/carers. Due to the success of our first team, we have recently expanded our service in Reading with a second MHST and will launch a third team in September 2025.
About the role
In line with the Government’s priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people in educational settings.
Senior Wellbeing Practitioners (SWPs) will play a key role as members of the Mental Health Support Teams (MHST). The Trainee Senior Wellbeing Practitioner role provides career progression from the EMHP roles, to enable practitioners to work with children/young people with more complex presentations and to provide supervision to EMHP/CWPs.
Whilst undertaking the 2–year Senior Wellbeing Practitioner Post Graduate Diploma at Reading University, successful applicants will deliver evidence-based low intensity interventions to children and young people in schools in accordance with NICE guidelines. The role will also include training to provide supervision to Trainee EMHPs and EMHPs. The post holder will be supervised and supported by university staff and experienced mental health practitioners within MHST, and will work closely with professionals supporting children and young people.
Successful applicants will be expected to manage their allocated caseload and to prepare and present caseload information at regular supervision sessions. The successful candidates will complete a 2-year training course (fully funded) covering supervision and support for c/yp with more complex presentations. Training will be at Reading University, starting February 2025, subject to further successful interview.
