The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Communication and engagement officer (Bus Service Improvement Plan) to join our BSIP Team. The Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) is a joint initiative between North Somerset Council (NSC), the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), the Department for Transport (DfT) and bus operators.
We want North Somerset communities to have a modern, efficient, reliable, and affordable public transport system they can enjoy for years to come. The BSIP is working to achieve this goal by delivering packages of joined-up improvements, from more frequent bus services to more affordable fares, which work alongside our new bus service and sustainable travel infrastructure schemes, to benefit residents and communities.
The Bus Service Improvement Plan team have a large programme of communication and engagement activities to deliver over a short period of time. This post is required to support with organising and analysing capital engagement programme events as well as supporting with the wider aims/objectives of the BSIP programme.
Key Responsibilities:
This position is fixed term until March 2026 and is currently based at the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare.

Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake research and information gathering following public engagement
- Develop targeted and coordinated communications activities to meet these objectives using appropriate channels and messages.
- Draft communications on behalf of key project stakeholders within the agreed corporate style and publish/circulate when agreed.
- Put in place evaluation measures to assess the effectiveness of activities, and provide feedback on outcomes to others through formal reporting, or work with them so they are able to evaluate activities themselves.
- Work with key stakeholders on works, disruptions, new schemes, service changes, new shelters, transport hubs and other activities around the BSIP programme.

About You
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about communications and engagement , and who possesses the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria:
- Degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience of working in a marketing and / or communications role.
- Ability to listen to and ask appropriate questions to understand objectives, and advise on and deliver activities, at times being able to persuade service area to follow your professional judgement.
- Experience of using MS Office products, social media, web content editing and able to adapt quickly to using new software.
- Able to research, develop, deliver and monitor communications and marketing activities - including writing communications plans, and reporting on their effectiveness.
- Ability to manage/organise own work to meet agreed deadlines.
- Excellent standards of writing to suit the audience with attention to detail and strong visual presentation skills.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience of working with senior officers and / or members, partner organisations and the media and able to develop and maintain positive working relationships.
- Up to date knowledge of digital channels and professional standards
