Highways Assistant Engineer (Tunnel, Structures and Drainage)

We are seeking an Assistant Engineer to join Medway Council’s Highway’s department to help maintain the Medway Tunnel. The successful candidate will:
- need to be mechanical and electrical experienced and will be directed by the Senior Engineer (Tunnel, Structures & Drainage),
- ensure regular maintenance regime is kept up to date,
- ensure that documentation is processed and kept relevant,
- ensure the tunnel complies with current regulations,
The post is based at Medway Tunnel office as part of a small, team. The post holder will need to be willing to join the Tunnel on call rota, for which, full training is given and supported by the Senior Engineer as required. Medway Tunnel has regular overnight maintenance closures, you will be expected to attend all closures. These happen 4 times a year for an average of 3 nights 7pm to 6am.
The role involves project management, delivering work programmes, monitoring the performance of schemes to ensure services are provided at the highest level. It also requires raising orders for maintenance programmes and reactive maintenance. The role also supports Highways Drainage and Structures team when necessary. The post holder will also be expected to maintain and further develop the working partnerships between the service and internal / external partners.
Working as part of the wider Highway Service offers opportunities to be involved in and contribute to a wide range of projects and workstreams.
About You
The successful candidate should:
- have demonstrable experience commensurate with the role of Assistant Engineer.
- have suitable experience within Mechanical and Electrical maintenance field.
- Have ability to communicate technical and emotive topics to a wide range of audiences, at all levels.
The post holder should be educated to minimum GCSE/ BTEC level, working towards a HNC in either a Mechanical or Electrical background, interest in both areas would be advantageous.
This role is a stationary position, based mainly at the office located at the West Service building at the Medway Tunnel. As this building is only accessible via a motor vehicle, it is therefore, essential that the post holder holds a valid driving licence and access to a motor vehicle.
A mobile phone would be supplied as part of the role. This post includes an essential car user allowance, plus mileage paid at a per mile rate. You will benefit from a minimum of 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays) increasing to 30 days leave after five years’ service.
