This vacancy is only open to North Somerset Council employees and agency workers contracted to North Somerset Council.
North Somerset's Children with Disabilities Team are looking to recruit a committed, passionate and enthusiastic Family Support Worker to join their team of Social Workers and Family Support Workers on a permanent basis. Based in the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare we cover the whole of North Somerset and work with children, young people and their families.
About the Role
As a Family Support Worker, you will offer practical help and emotional support to families who are caring for a disabled child(ren). You will undertake an initial assessment of the families' needs through the Children with disabilities Early Support Pathway, so that you can identify and plan the support needed to address issues the families are experiencing. You will co-ordinate and work with the families and other agencies involved with children with disabilities, to promote a positive outcome by meeting their needs and achieving the goals identified in their service plan.
There will be occasions where you will be required to work outside of normal office hours, including evening and some weekend work.
This post is exempt under the provisions of the Rehabilitations of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975 and is subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.

About You
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about the welfare of children, young people and their carers, and who possesses the following skills and experience:
- You will have good all round education with possible qualification in work with children or young people to a minimum NVQ Level 3 or 4 (or working towards this).
- Proven experience of working directly with children and families in difficult situations.
- Experience of working with children and young people with SEND.
- Knowledge of good parenting and the risk factors that poor parenting and adults with multiple problems may present to children.
- Able to resolve confrontational situations in a respectful manner and retain the trust and respect of the people you are working with.
- Able to listen and build consensus with a range of organisations and people.
- Ability to practice in a way that safeguards children.
- Ability to prioritise and work under pressure but have the confidence to identify when you need help.
