Are you interested in bringing your experience to an organisation that plays a vital role in the democratic process?

Who we are

The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections and regulates political finance in the UK. We work to promote public confidence in the democratic process and ensure its integrity.

The team in Wales focusses on all areas of work relating to electoral events that take place in, and affect Wales. This includes the annual household canvass of electors, elections to the Senedd, UK Parliament, Police and Crime Commissioner and local government elections.

The Electoral Commission has a statutory duty to comply with the Welsh Language Standards, created in line with the Welsh Language Measure (2011). We are committed to the principle that in our day-to-day business, and provision of resources and services, the Welsh and English languages should be treated on a basis of equality.

Who we are looking for

You will be -

  • bilingual and happy working in both English and Welsh
  • experienced in using digital tools and software programmes such as Microsoft Sharepoint and website content management systems.
  • organised and efficient.
  • comfortable working to deadlines and providing timely turnaround of work at all times, including during pressurised election periods.

The role

You will play a key role in our small Welsh Language Unit. You will:

  • Be the key administrator within the translation team, monitoring the translation requests, allocating translations to team members and liaising with customers
  • Support the translation team by translating and proofreading small pieces of work in line with the Commission’s Welsh Language Standards and corporate style guidelines, working to agreed timescales and using translation software
  • Support and advise colleagues across the Commission on developing Welsh language content, helping to ensure that we meet our statutory commitments set out in the Welsh language standards.
  • Input Welsh content onto our website using content management software
  • Promote Welsh language awareness across the Commission, and assist in dealing with Welsh language queries internally
  • Play a part in planning and prioritising translation working closely with Commission teams and directorates in other parts of the UK
  • Other aspects of the Commission’s work in Wales. As an example, this could be developing bilingual communications materials, or working with external stakeholders and partners.
  • Become familiar with all areas of the Commission’s work, and to develop a close working relationship with colleagues based at various locations across the UK.
